1. Insertion loss is too high (signal attenuation is large)
Performance: transmission distance is shortened or signal is unstable.
Possible reasons:
End face pollution (dust, fingerprints).
End face scratches or connector deterioration.
Fiber bending radius is too small (OM3 minimum bending radius recommended ≥10mm).
Solution:
Clean the end face with dust-free alcohol cotton or fiber cleaning pen.
Check whether the end face of the jumper is intact and replace it if necessary.
Avoid sharp bends to ensure smooth wiring.
2. Insufficient bandwidth leads to high-speed transmission failure
Performance: Link error rate above 10G is high and the nominal rate cannot be reached.
Possible reasons:
Exceeding the effective transmission distance of OM3 (such as 10G BASE-SR maximum 300m, 40G/100G only 100m).
Mixed use of different grades of optical fiber (such as OM1/OM2 and OM3).
Solution:
Confirm that the link length is within the OM3 specification range.
Use OM3 or higher specification (such as OM4) patch cords throughout the process.
3. Loose connectors or poor contact
Symptoms: The signal is intermittent and recovers briefly after plugging and unplugging.
Possible causes:
The LC connector buckle is broken or aged.
The adapter port is worn.
Solution:
Replace the patch cord or adapter.
Choose a high-quality LC connector with a metal buckle.
4. End face mismatch (UPC/APC mixed)
Symptoms: High return loss, affecting signal quality.
Possible causes:
Missed multimode OM3 patch cords (usually UPC end faces) with single-mode APC patch cords.
Solution:
Confirm the end face type of the device, and use UPC end faces uniformly for multimode systems.
5. Physical damage to the optical fiber
Symptoms: The signal is completely interrupted or the local attenuation increases sharply.
Possible causes:
The patch cord is squeezed, stretched or bent excessively.
Damage caused by external forces such as rat bites and trampling.
Solution:
Check the appearance of the jumper and replace the damaged part.
Use cable trough or casing for protection when wiring.
6. Wavelength mismatch
Symptom: The optical module cannot communicate normally.
Possible cause:
OM3 is suitable for 850nm/1300nm multimode transmission and is mistakenly used for single-mode wavelength (1310nm/1550nm).
Solution:
Ensure that the optical module matches the jumper mode (multimode module with multimode jumper).
7. Environmental aging problem
Symptom: Performance deteriorates after long-term use.
Possible cause:
High temperature and humidity cause cracking of the optical fiber coating.
Deterioration of the sheath material (such as PVC deformation at high temperature).
Solution:
Choose a high-temperature resistant sheath (such as LSZH material).
Check old jumpers regularly.
Maintenance and preventive measures
Proper cleaning: Avoid using ordinary paper towels to wipe the end face, and special cleaning tools are recommended.
Standardized wiring: Use cable management racks to fix and avoid cross-entanglement.
Compatibility verification: When upgrading the network, confirm that the jumper supports the target rate (e.g. 40G-SR4 requires MPO jumpers, and OM3 needs to be used with short distances).
Regular testing: Use an optical power meter to detect loss (the loss of a single connection point of an OM3 jumper should be ≤0.3dB).
Differences between OM3 and OM4
Bandwidth: OM3 (2000MHz·km @850nm) vs OM4 (4700MHz·km).
Transmission distance: OM4 is about 50% longer than OM3 in 40G/100G scenarios.
Cost: OM3 is more economical and suitable for projects with limited budgets and shorter distances.
